This is a very important aspect of counselling. Counselling is a private and confidential form of help. Information is held about clients and the counselling they receive in confidence. This means that your therapist will not normally give your name or any information to anyone. However, there are exceptional cases where your therapist might ethically or legally have to give information to relevant authorities, for example if she had reason to believe that someone, especially a child or vulnerable adult, is at serious risk of harm, or to prevent a miscarriage of justice. If you come with a partner or your family, the counsellor may suggest seeing each of you individually. It is important for you to know that what is said in those individual sessions will be confidential and not shared with your partner or family. However individual members of a couple or family can waive their right to confidentiality if they feel that there is benefit in the sharing of information, but this needs to be discussed on a case by case basis and would only ever be on a need to know basis and in the interests of overall recovery. Finally, should you meet your counsellor outside of the counselling setting, she won’t acknowledge you in order to protect privacy and confidentiality for you both.
The information about confidentiality in no way contravenes your rights under the GDPR (2018) to access personal data that your therapist holds about you. All records are kept securely and are subject to the GDPR (2018). Records are kept for a period of 7 years and are then destroyed.
Supervision: I engage in regular consultations with other professionals, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to GDPR regulations.
Therapeutic Will: In the event of my death, your contact details will be shared with my Therapeutic Executor to facilitate continued care.
Emergencies: If I suspect imminent harm to yourself or others, or if legally required, I may need to disclose information without prior notice.
